With the Astro Pro sleeping bag series, Deuter has launched a sleeping bag series that includes four sleeping bag models. The four sleeping bag models differ mainly in the temperature range and thus also in the areas of applications and the comfort temperature ranges of the Astro Pro series range from 2°C for the Astro Pro 400 to -12°C for the Astro Pro 1000. The Deuter Astro Pro 800 is available in three different sizes – Regular, L & SL (women). The regular version is suitable for people with a height of up to 185 cm, the L version for people with a height of up to 200 cm and the SL variant is the female model and is suitable up to a height of 175cm. The female model is specially adapted to the need of women in which reinforcing inserts in the kidney and foot area were used for a higher comfort.

Deuter’s Astro Pro 800 has a comfort temperature of -7°C, a transition temperature of -15°C and an extreme temperature of -33 ° C. This temperature range classifies the Astro Pro 800 as a classic three-season sleeping bag, although people who are sensitive to the cold can also use the sleeping bag on very mild summer nights.

The Astro Pro 800 has a filling weight of 800g, which is what the 800 stands for in the product name. The total weight of the sleeping bag is 1410g without packsack and 1520g with packsack, which means that the Astro Pro 800 is not an absolute lightweight but is absolutely within the range of similar products with the same comfort temperature. Deuter has equipped the Astro Pro 800 with a Stretch Comfort System, which means that the sleeping bag can be stretched by up to 25% in width and thus ideally adapts to the body shape. The waffle structure of the down chambers in the lower area of the sleeping bag prevents the downs from slipping when moving at night and thus always ensures ideal thermal insulation. In addition, the Astro Pro 800 has a thermal collar that is designed to prevent cold air from entering the sleeping bag. This is secured with Velcro so that the thermal collar does not move or open while sleeping. The sleeping bag also has a pocket inside the sleeping bag.

The included compression bag allows an easy and very compressed packing, which is very practical, especially on longer trekking tours, as the space in the backpack is known to be limited.

Review

In order to test the thermal output of the Deuter Astro Pro 800, we warmed up the sleeping bag and used a thermal imaging camera to see how much heat the sleeping bag emits and where cold bridges occur.

First, we spread out the sleeping bag so that the down can be puffed up properly and maximum isolation can be achieved. To warm up the sleeping bag, we placed three hot water bottles, which we filled with hot water, in the body area of the sleeping bag, as well as a hot water bottle in the head area. We put two glasses between the hot water bottles so that the warm air can be distributed throughout the sleeping bag.

After 15 minutes we took three pictures with the thermal imaging camera in order to see in which areas the Deuter Astro Pro 800 emits the most heat. The blue areas on the pictures mean that they have the lowest surface temperature and the further the color changes towards red, the higher the surface temperature at these points is. However, the images cannot be compared one-to-one, as the temperature range is redefined for each image. You can see this from the three temperature indications on the picture (red = highest temperature, green = lowest temperature, white = average temperature).

The images from the thermal imaging camera show that the Deuter Astro Pro 800 has good thermal insulation, as the surface in the middle of the sleeping bag has only risen to 6.4 ° C. However, it is noticeable that a relatively large amount of heat emits in the folds and seams of the foot area. However, this is not visible in the head area, which is very important when the sleeping bag is used on the edge of the comfort area.

Conclusion

The Deuter Astro Pro 800 is a great sleeping bag for an overnight stay outdoors in minus degrees. Due to the high weight and the relatively large pack size, the Astro Pro 800 is not suitable for longer winter tours, where you have to pay close attention to the weight. On the other hand, the Astro Pro 800 can also be classified in the lower price segment for winter sleeping bags.
